Sunlit Gothic red-sandstone cathedral with ornate arched stained-glass window and blurred pedestrians crossing in front.

As part of an exhibition to commemorate the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt, Chester Cathedral are screening the film “There is a light that never goes out”.

This is a rediscovered 50-minute documentary about the 1994 ‘Quilts of Love’ display of the AIDS Quilt UK at Hyde Park Corner.

The film was never broadcast, screened only once privately, and was presumed lost for thirty years until co-maker Zowie Broach found a VHS copy in storage. It features Quilt makers and organiser Alastair Hume reflecting on the display, plus interviews with attendees including Michael Hutchence, Boy George, Neneh Cherry and Rifat Ozbek. It premiered publicly for the first time at Tate Modern in June 2025 and was shown again at Wakefield Exchange in June 2026.
