Artisan gelateria secures highest possible accolade on debut entry, joining elite 1.9% of award winners.

Krum Gelato, the beloved artisan gelateria nestled in Chester's historic city centre, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing the prestigious three-star Great Taste Award for its signature pistachio gelato – the highest accolade possible from the Guild of Fine Food's internationally renowned scheme.

In an extraordinary debut achievement, owners Fabrizio Gobbato and Valentina Aviotti have joined the exclusive ranks of culinary excellence, with their pistachio gelato earning recognition amongst just 1.9% of over 14,000 entries nationwide to receive the coveted three-star rating, described by judges as "exquisite." Of these few three-star winners, only a tiny handful are gelato—a testament to the exceptional quality of Krum’s product. The three-star award requires unanimous agreement amongst the expert judging panel that the product is of exceptional quality, with judges describing it as a product so outstanding that they would seek it out and recommend it unreservedly.

The flavour is astonishing, rich with pistachios and the taste of their roasted skin. Indulgent, creamy and luxurious but clean at the same time. Intense, true pistachio flavour.

This is an intensely flavoured pistachio gelato, with a delightful texture that one judge described as deliciously ‘chewy-fatty’. There is beautiful tertiary sage green colour – and a slight savoury sensation of saltiness that helps round it all off.

The texture is thick, creamy and unctuous, coating the mouth with quality dairy notes and the taste of well roasted pistachio. This is a quality gelato in both texture and flavour.

The sweetness is spot on, as is the creamy mouth feel. This is everything you would want a gelato to be.

We're absolutely over the moon

To achieve this recognition on our very first entry feels quite surreal. We hope this makes the Chester community proud and honours our Italian culinary traditions at the highest level.

The award-winning gelato distinguishes itself through its unique texture and the exclusive use of specially selected Bronte pistachio nuts – Sicily's most prized variety – which creates the distinctive paste that forms the foundation of their acclaimed recipe.

This latest accolade adds to the couple's impressive culinary portfolio, which included Da Noi Chester, featured in the prestigious Michelin Guide, and currently also includes Augusto Pizzeria, further cementing their reputation as purveyors of authentic Italian cuisine in the North West.

The Great Taste Awards, judged by over 500 food experts including renowned chefs, food writers, and industry specialists, represents the world's largest food and drink award scheme.

Products are evaluated through rigorous blind tastings, with three-star winners representing the pinnacle of taste and quality.

Established in 2023, Krum Gelato has quickly become a cornerstone of Chester's food scene, crafting fresh gelato daily using traditional Italian methods and natural ingredients. The gelateria sources its dairy locally from Peckforton Farm, maintaining its commitment to supporting regional producers whilst delivering authentic Italian flavours.
